Funny Pets

Our family has always had dogs, from the time I was a little boy and my mother brough home a little black mixed-poodle from the pet store. I was only six-years-old, and I was fascinated by this gentle little animal who spent the first week hiding underneath my parent's vibrant green couch. But it wasn't long after that when this shy little animal became comfortable with our family, and soon spent her afternoons snuggling on the couch with my mother while she watched her daytime soaps.

That loving little pet has been gone for quite some time, and now my family and I have a loyal, loving Australian Shepherd that my wife bought (adopted) from a local dog breeder. My wife saw the puppies for sale sign on the side of the road, and she knew that I had wanted another dog since my good friend Fresco, a sheltie, had died at the ripe old age of sixteen--not bad for a collie breed dog.

At first I was a little shocked at this black, white, and brown creature that was sleeping on our living room carpet. I had not expected my family to surprise me with a new pet, and I didn't know that I was ready for a new canine friend, but I quickly grew to love and appreciate this new four-legged puppy who found his way into our home and into our hearts.

When Dogs Look Like Their Owners

dogs look like ownersDog lovers come in all shapes and sizes, and it is curious that there are always comparisons between the dogs and their owners. Maybe how we choose our pets is a sub-conscious decision, and really we are picking out animals that represent our personalities, or maybe our physical traits, which might explain why so many dogs look like their owners (or vice versa).

Whether it's a chubby old man with his scruffy English bulldog, a shaggy-haired teenager with his poofy-maned Komondor, or a long-faced woman with her Doberman Pinscher, there can be many similarities noticed between the dog and the owner.

While it might not be polite to point out to your friend that she looks just like her chihuahua, or her sons look just like a pair of boxers, the canine kind not the fighters, there might just be some cosmic influence that makes us associate better with dogs (or cats?) that look like four-legged representations of ourselves. Is it some anthropomorphic coincidence that your girlfriend's curly locks look similar in colour and texture to her cockerspaniel, Derek? According to science, we aren't that much removed from our animal cousins--don't we share 97% of our DNA with monkeys???

While it's curious that people have a tendency to look like their dogs, the resemblances being fairly obvious even when the pooch isn't wearing a matching sweater, it's funny that no one every seems to make these human/animal comparisons when it comes to cats. Other than maybe the Catwoman, who doesn't really look like a cat, or those science experiments on the Island of Dr. Moreau (was the good doctor really an aspiring veterinarian?), there aren't many similarities between felines and fraulines. Maybe this is why dogs are more loyal than cats--they also recognize the similarities in appearance and endear themselves to their human masters.

Funny Pet Poem
My little funny pet likes to play; Frolicking, scampering, and being cute all day. Playing with yarn and chasing balls; My funny pet is here to stay.
